What Are Learning Logs (LLs)?
Short, objective entries Mathematical problem-solving Observations of science experiments Questions about readings/lectures Lists of reading, homework, etc. Brief, factual, or impersonal Assessment Tool
2
LLs: Metacognitive Reflection
Asking students to think about their own thinking I can use what I have learned today to… What did you do well? I feel successful working with this topic because… I was confused when… I know…but I need more help with… I was unsure about ____ but now I _____ because… Allowing students to process what they have done and reflect on their learning
3
When using learning logs (LLs) the emphasis is on reflection and the self-evaluation of learning.
4
Purpose of LLs To help sharpen the learner’s ability to observe and document his or her learning, and to use the documentation for self-assessment and clarification
5
Process: LLs Since LLs are a record of learning as it occurs, teachers can use them to determine what a student is learning, where they are struggling, and how they need help.
6
Use Learning Logs (LLs)
Reflect on information presented Connect ideas Monitor change Respond to questions Brainstorm ideas Help identify problems Record problem-solving techniques
7
LLs – What To Expect Model and discuss the kinds of documentation you are looking for. Clarify the criteria for unsatisfactory, satisfactory, and excellent entries, so that the expectations are clear. This will allow you to avoid receiving learning log that are full of one-word or one sentence responses.
8
Build regular time for students to complete their learning log (Exit Ticket) so that it becomes a predictable ritual. The more you do it, the easier it gets. Engage learners in discussion and sharing based on what they’ve written in their learning logs, so that their documentation can be used for a real communicative purpose (as well as a reflective one).
9
Assessing LLs Depth and personalization of responses (ex., undeveloped to powerful) Level of thoughtfulness Point values based on completion Checklist or rubric Peer review Self-assessment Select entries for rewriting and grading
