Example lesson 7: A Christmas Carol: the relationship between Fred and Scrooge Rosie Lunt, City of London Academy Islington

2 Scrooge’s nephew comes to visit him in his office.
What do you think will happen in their meeting? How will Scrooge behave towards a family member?

3 In your pairs… Decide who is Scrooge and who is Fred, his nephew.
Read the scene once sitting down. Annotate your lines with how you would like to perform them. Think about: tone of voice, gestures and actions, facial expression, movement, props. Now stand up and rehearse your scene!

4 Watching performances
In the performance you see… How did Scrooge behave towards his nephew? How did the actor show this? How did Fred behave towards Scrooge? How did the actor show this? Did you agree with this interpretation of the characters? Why? Is there anything you would do differently? Why?

5 Dickens’ text Let’s read this extract from Stave 1.
What do you notice about the relationship between Scrooge and Fred? And… How does Dickens’ description of Scrooge and Fred alter or reinforce our impression of their relationship?

6 How does Dickens present the relationship between Scrooge and Fred?
Task: Create your own interpretation of the relationship between Scrooge and Fred. Choose the form in which you would like to present this. You could… Write a monologue from Fred or Scrooge’s perspective… Write a text / Whatsapp conversation between Scrooge and Fred… Write the play script of a conversation between Fred and his wife about Scrooge… Describe the scene in which Scrooge meets his sister Fran’s new baby, Fred… Or any other ideas you have…
