1 Aggregating data for more informed decision making
Dean Athan Peninsula Health

2 Peninsula Service Sites
Major Sites: Frankston, Mt Eliza & Rosebud Services: Acute, Psych, Community, Aged Care, Palliative Care & Rehab. 800+ beds 60,969 I/P’s 293,604 O/P’s

3 In The Beginning: In 2000 our dilemma was nothing new to other health organisations: Data Rich but information poor! Inefficient information delivery. In 2001 we re-structured through the creation of the MIS department to ensure we had ‘one consistent source for all data’. We addressed information delivery through automated batch distribution systems

4 Where we have come from:
In 2002 we developed our first Web-Intranet reporting system (OnLine 1) - limited to 2 Financial reports. Nov 2003: Report distribution was recognised as a key inefficiency. Challenge associated with managing: Chart of Account Implementation Implementation of new FMIS (Oracle) Undertook an evaluation of a number of BI systems Cost to hospital to purchase a BI solution $ K plus yearly licensing and support costs.

5 The Problem: Need for an intelligent system for all of our information and reports using: Web-intranet front end to allow easy access from all of our campuses. Aggregate and detail reporting with drill-down Incorporates the Organisation Structure Incorporates various reports. “…..There were no available funds and resourcing required to develop or replace the existing reporting environment into a business intelligent system….”

6 The Solution: Over the last 2 years Peninsula has gradually moved many of its databases to Microsoft SQL Server. Jan 27, Microsoft released an add-on service to SQL Server. The new service is known as: SQL Server Reporting Services The 2004 release of SQL Server database - Microsoft has entered the BI market traditionally led by specialist companies, such as Crystal Decisions, Business Objects & others. At Peninsula it took us less than 1-week to develop all of the Online 1 capabilities. For consistency we named our MS SQL Server Reporting Services solution to ‘OnLine 2’.

7 Online 1 versus OnLine 2 Online 1 OnLine 2 Requires User Logon Yes No
Include SP & Capital Fund reports Include Payroll reports Include summary level reporting Report generation speed Very Fast Fast Revenue reporting for CC’s Graphical analysis Ability to easily add new reports Report drill down capability Some Ability to save reports in multiple formats (Excel, PDF, etc) Ability to Print multiple CC’s in a Cluster/Aggregate Ability to upload and share reports

8 Extract, Transform & Load
SQL Architecture at PH PH Feeder Systems USER INTERFACE SQL Server 2000 Microsoft Reporting Services G/L Microsoft SQL - Data Warehouse OnLine 2 SAP Extract, Transform & Load E.T.L. rdl files PAS rdl files CIZER Other Visual Studio.NET Pathology

9 Benefits of OnLine 2 ‘One Stop Shop’ for ALL cost centre based reporting. Acts as a data warehouse for current & historical data. OnLine 2 works with any source feeder systems (including current G/L & Oracle) Seamless user transition from old CoA to new CoA Seamless user transition from old G/L to new Oracle FMIS system. PH – Is one of 3 lead agencies

10 Benefits of OnLine 2 More consistent and accurate reports
New reports produced within a significantly reduced timeframe Cost of development and implementation was negligible to the organisation. Leveraged of existing infrastructure Used existing resources. No yearly support & Licensing costs.

11 Benefits of OnLine 2 to the Organisation
SQL Data warehouse and Reporting Services provides for: Use of a common Architecture A standard MS application which is externally supported by MS and its partners. One source for all information One consistent version of the truth “….a person who has one watch knows what time it is. A person who has two watches is never quite sure…..”

12 What the OnLine 2 Reporting System will do for users
Provide relevant information and analysis on demand Reporting flexibility allows for personalised delivery of information. BI becomes easier and more accessible Reduce information latency to decision makers and managers
