2 Welcome Back! Do-now: Have out two paragraphs (comparison to Pi)
Then, write on the following question: Why do you think Pi has survived so long? What are qualities he possesses and circumstances that have allowed him to survive for so long? I’m a survivor, I’m not gon’ give up…

3 Prayer (Nafiso) Thurs: Diego, Fri: Victor

4 Announcements: Highlight revisions on essay and hand in with original copy from Ms. Stitt

5 Tip of the Day: Should you use the word “you” even in quizzes?
NO! Don’t do it!

6 SWBAT: Explain how Pi uses operant conditioning

7 Share your paragraphs…
What would you do the same as Pi? What might you do differently? Take a minute to briefly share with your partners.

8 Two volunteers needed…

9 As a class… We want to “train” our volunteers.
Volunteer 1: What do we want to train this person to do? (Stand on a table? Erase the whiteboard? Hide behind the curtain?) Every time the person does something that gets them closer to doing the correct behavior, we’re going to clap for them. When they move farther away from doing our desired behavior, we must be silent. Getting closer to desire behavior = clap/cheer Moving away from desired behavior = silence

10

11 Training volunteer 2… Volunteer 2: We want to discourage them from doing a behavior. What behavior do we want them to NOT do (Talk? Sit down? Pick up a pencil/pen?) Every time the person does the “bad” behavior, we are going to boo them. When they are not doing the bad behavior, we are silent. Bad behavior = booing Other behavior = silence

12 Operant Conditioning:
Reinforcement = encouraging a behavior by adding something pleasant or removing something negative E.g. a teacher gives out points for doing an assignment E.g. a parent lets you out of being grounded early for being good. Punishment = discouraging a behavior by adding something negative or taking away something positive E.g. a parent takes away a phone because of bad behavior E.g. a child is spanked for bad behavior

13 Pi’s training of Richard Parker
Pi tries to train Richard Parker with different techniques. List out his techniques Explain whether each technique is reinforcement or punishment. Are his techniques working? How do you know? How might knowledge of operant conditioning be applicable and relevant to our world today?

14 p. 211

15 HW: Read to page 256 Explain Pi’s encounter with the other person. What happens? Summarize their encounter in 4-6 sentences. Explain two other major events that happen during the reading. Exit: What is the difference between reinforcement and punishment?
