1 Lesson Objective: You will be able to define “metalloids” and be able to compare physical properties of metalloids to metals and nonmetals.

2 How can this have a shiny luster and not be magnetic?

3 Metalloids: Metalloids have some physical properties of metals, and some physical properties of nonmetals.

4 Ex: Silicon Ductile when heated (physical property of metal).
Brittle at room temperature (physical property of nonmetal).

5 Metalloids: They are solids that can be shiny or dull.
Usually have a shiny luster. Mostly brittle when a solid. Malleable and ductile when heated up.

6 Metalloid Examples:

7 Glass cat

8 What eventually happens if you play videogames for too long?

9 What do you think the word “Semi-Conductor” means?

10 Metalloids are “semi-conductors”.
They conduct more heat and electricity than nonmetals, but less than metals.

11 Why do you think all of our technology is made of metalloids and not metals or nonmetals?

12

13 Antimony metalloid Arsenic Metalloid

14 Metals would conduct too much heat, while nonmetals would not conduct any! Metalloids are the perfect balance!

15 Metal, Nonmetal, or Metalloid?

16 Trevor is looking at an object in class
Trevor is looking at an object in class. It is solid, does not conduct electricity, malleable, and has a shiny luster. The sample is MOST likely a __________.

17 Patrick is looking at an object in class
Patrick is looking at an object in class. It is pale green, brittle, and has no shine. The sample is MOST likely a ___________.

18 Irvin is examining an object in science class
Irvin is examining an object in science class. It is solid, magnetic, and conducts heat and electricity very well. This sample is MOST likely a ______________.
