Rural Land Degradation
Livestock Project in Burkina Faso
3
Burkina Faso Population 9.4 million
Population increase – 2.5% per annum Life expectancy – 48 years 85% of population live in rural areas Adult literacy – 8.4% for females - 27.9% for males

Problems faced by Burkina Faso
Desertification and land degradation caused by over use of natural resources and a series of drought years The challenge of feeding a rapidly increasing population while relying heavily on basic farming methods which have not changed in centuries

Problems faced by Burkina Faso
INSPIRE AND TRANSFORM Problems faced by Burkina Faso Government policies and growing consumerism which have led to a growing pressure to grow cash crops A heavy national debt problem AIDS is a major threat and is already affecting the balance of the population and reducing debt repayment
7
The Livestock Project The project is based in the Tangaye, 140km north of Ouagadougou – an area farmed by the Mossi tribe Tangaye is an area where subsistence farming is the main livlihood Land degradation and inadequate rainfall have made it increasingly difficult for families to produce enough food

9
The Livestock Project One of the main consequences of these factors has been a significant rise in rural-urban migration and the subsequent breaking up of rural communities The project is funded by the British charity Tear Fund

Aims of the Project Initial aims of the project were to:
INSPIRE AND TRANSFORM Aims of the Project Initial aims of the project were to: - provide improved living standards - greater food security for families This was to be achieved through provision and training in improved agricultural techniques
11
Objectives of the Project
Increase food production and diversify crops Improve soil fertility through the use of animal manure Reduce the burden of work on families, especially women, and increase their productivity through the use of appropriate technology
12
Methods Used Education and training was provided for farmers in the selection and care of their oxen The establishment of manure-producing cowsheds – source of manure (must be rotted full) Purchase of cattle – one per family Purchase of agricultural equipment – particularly ploughs
14
Methods Used Provision of veterinary care
Stone lines constructed along contours A community approach was engendered Some reforestation was carried out
15
INSPIRE AND TRANSFORM Outcomes Families can cultivate 2-3 times more land than they could by hand Increased food production – 25% higher with manure Other families are copying the techniques Improved standards of health, esp women as they can use the animals for transport
16
Outcomes The main problem facing the project is enabling it to become self-sufficient and therefore no longer reliant on outside agencies for funding There have also been a small number of deaths amongst the cattle which obviously inhibits the effectiveness of the project and highlights the need for adequate veterinary care to be available and accessible to the locals

Livestock Project in Burkina Faso
What are some of the problems that Burkina Faso faced which led to the need for the project? 5 What were the aims of the project? 2 What methods were used to meet the aims? What were some of the outcomes of the project?
