Materials Needed
Easel and flipcharts, markers (MeHAF to supply)
3 facilitators
Copies of placemats for each participant (60)
Directions
Split grantees into 3 groups. Each group will have a facilitator.
Participants have a few minutes to review the placemat then the facilitator asks group for their responses. They are added to the flipchart.
Have facilitators rotate to next location. Participants look at next placemat and build upon what was said in previous round.
Give 5 minute warnings while in group.
Collect placemats back.

Programs that reduce barriers to accessing care are essential for treatment initiation and ongoing engagement. In discussions with providers and patients, seven overlapping primary barriers emerged (infographic A). Patients cited additional barriers (infographic B).

Key Finding 2
Organizational resources and supports for providers facilitate the expansion of MAT in primary care settings.
Providers agree that current and future MAT prescribers could benefit from professional mentoring, particularly providers that have newly completed an X-waiver training
Collaboration and stakeholder engagement have been critical to informing systems of care and establishing the partnerships necessary to provide comprehensive MAT programs
Grantee organizations who do not have a centralized treatment location have employed universal releases
Leadership, providers, and staff all need to support the integration of a MAT program
In year two, change teams have expressed the importance of having a project coordinator or manager

Engagement
Recruit providers to participate (and be aware of barriers to recruitment)
Engage partners early
Convene a diverse advisory group
Infrastructure
Understand the types of providers and support staff that will be needed for the program
Establish a relationship with a pharmacy/pharmacist
Plan out the program’s infrastructure (e.g. processes for registrations, schedule, finances)
Have a project coordinator or designate someone who will push the work forward (strong leadership)
Flexibility
Individualization for patients
Flexibility for the program as it grows
Other
Don’t make assumptions (e.g. about who will want to participate and who won’t, who is educated around issues related to substance use disorders)
Find time to educate yourself about relevant topics (e.g. OUDs, substance use disorders, needle exchanges, etc.)

Prepare for lots of hard work, but it will pay off with rewarding experiences
