3 History Founded in 1732 by James Edward Oglethorpe
Located on the Atlantic Coast of North America Established land between the Savannah and Altamaha rivers Claimed the rivers as well(was a part of the colony) Why? A philanthropic and military enterprise Would provide the “worthy” poor a new start Serve as a buffer between Spanish Florida and the English colonies.

Put under the governance of 21 trustees Became a Royal Government in 1752 Became a slave colony in 1749 Created rules and regulations to: Craft the colony into a utopia No social classes laws against slavery and alcoholic beverages When it was first started you could not: have slaves own more than 500 acres of land or practice Catholicism or Judaism out loud.

English citizens in debt Had to follow strict rules to stay Slavery was not allowed Alcohol was not permitted 50 acres of land per person Could not be sold and given to someone else Settlers began to go against the strict laws put in place Gave colonists what they wanted in 1740’s

8 Review James Oglethorpe and trustees came to Georgia to give debtors a second chance Placed strict rules in place to create a “utopian society” Settlers began to go against the rules in place around a year after created Got rid of rules in 1740’s
