1 Samuel de Champlain

2 Hello, my name is Samuel de Champlain
Hello, my name is Samuel de Champlain. You may have heard of my name from a popular bridge in Montreal, but there is much more to me than that! Let me tell you my story, and maybe then you can help me out!

3 I was born in 1563 in Brouage, France
I was born in 1563 in Brouage, France. I became a great navigator and learned how to sail a ship from my father, who was a ship captain. I loved to sail the oceans and discover new lands!

4 “The king during that time, King Henry IV, had made me his Geographer,
which meant a person who studies maps, the environment, and the life of humans depending on where they live. He had a clear mission for me. “ I am sending Francois Grave du Pont to New France. I want you to go with him as an observer and tell me what you see there. Examine its waterways and then choose a site for a large trading factory.

5 What do you think people in Canada
were trading back then?

6 “So in 1603, we sailed out to NEW FRANCE!”

7 And made it all the way to New France!”
“Just like Jacques Cartier, the explorer before me, I crossed the Atlantic ocean And made it all the way to New France!”

8 LAKE HURON LAKE ERIE LAKE ONTARIO
“For three years, I explored everywhere and discovered new places, such as Acadia, Port-Royal, and Sainte-Croix! I also discovered three very important lakes:” LAKE HURON LAKE ERIE LAKE ONTARIO

9 The Order of Good Cheer In Acadia, I also started a new tradition…
It is a feast! Each day, a settler would gather local game, fish, fruits and plants with the help of the First Nation people to produce that nights supper. There was music and great celebration as the tiny settlement enjoyed each others company and a pleasant meal.

10 So in 1608, I decided to start the fur trade in…
Eventually, I knew I had to settle down and choose a land. However, none of the lands I visited were suitable for starting a fur trade, except for one. So in 1608, I decided to start the fur trade in…

11 “STADACONA. Do you remember what that city is called today?”

12 The Huron and the Algonquins
“Before Jacques Cartier left Canada for good, he did not leave on good terms with the native people in Quebec, the Iroquoians. Instead, the French settlers had made friends with a different group of natives…” The Huron and the Algonquins

13 “They were in war with the Iroquois, so my men and I teamed up with the Hurons
and Algonquins and went against them.”

14 QUEBEC CITY Until today, they call me the ‘Father of Canada’
“After we won over Quebec, I founded a new city…” QUEBEC CITY Until today, they call me the ‘Father of Canada’

15 “We were friends with the natives (except the Iroquois),
our fur trade was blooming, And everything was going great! Until…Someone else decided to conquer Canada as well…”

16 “In 1628 war broke out between England and
France and I had no choice but to surrender Quebec to the English and return to France” “Years later, after a peace treaty, I returned and became governor, but soon passed away in Quebec in 1635 from a stroke at the age of 60. “

17 Look! Here it is! “PS I also discovered a lake between what is now
New York and Vermont. I was the first To find it, so it was named after me…Lake Champlain!!” Look! Here it is!

18 Why I am super important:
I founded Quebec, which we live in TODAY I discovered a lake named after me, Lake Champlain (plus I also have a bridge named after me in Montreal!) Since I was a geologist, I drew tons of maps and was actually one of the first people to draw an accurate map of Canada I helped start the fur trade! I discovered tons of other lands and lakes! Can you remember some? I was friends with the Algonquins and Hurons!

19 Now that you know my story, could you help me out
Now that you know my story, could you help me out? I became familiar with this tool called “Twitter” yesterday, and I would like to send a…what do you call it…Tweet! I’m not sure how to. Could you help me write one? BUT CAREFUL: you only have 140 characters to do it!
