4 Who are AAT? Association of Accounting Technicians
A professional membership body. Providing qualifications for those working, and looking to work at all levels of accounting and finance. All learning and assessment areas will be assessed by some form of computer based assessment (CBA). 130,000 members worldwide 80,000 student members 50,000 full and fellow members What are AAT? We are the leading professional body for vocational accountants. We’ve been offering training and professional recognition for over 30 years. Flexible course – CBAs offer the opportunity for students to sit assessments as and when they feel ready, meaning they can take assessments a little early if they wanted, or even give themselves more time for revision. We are dedicated to providing training, support and advice to our members at every stage of their career. When you study for an AAT qualification, you also become a student member of AAT. This means you can call upon our expertise and resources whenever you need to. You don’t need any formal qualifications to begin studying AAT – all you need is a good grasp of Maths and English. If you have relevant qualifications or accounting experience, you may be exempt to certain levels of the course. You can carry out a skillcheck questionnaire to determine which level is best for you.

AAT Accounting Qualifications are based on the simple principle that it is related to real life. The practical and theory skills that you gain are designed to be relevant to what you do within your working role. You have the advantage of earning while you learn, meaning that you can apply what you learn to your job role. Both skills are developed coherently. The course is also confidence building and allows you to take on more responsibility. This means that you can shadow other members of your team and gain a broader understanding of the entire accounting department. Accounting staff are in demand, particularly those who are able to carry out a variety of accounting roles – therefore you’ll be worth more with AAT.

The 2015 AAT Salary Survey suggests that the AAT Accounting Qualification will significantly boost your earning power during your working life. Those surveyed who had completed the AAT Accounting Qualifications earn up to 67% more than those without. AAT Accounting Qualifications are a recognised business qualification within the marketplace with approximately 25% of relevant job adverts mentioning AAT. This shows the demand and acknowledgement of the qualification. Employers also find that AAT staff tend to hit the ground running, applying their skills from day one. If you are a full or fellow AAT member and you are offering accountancy, taxation or related consultancy services to the public you must become Licensed AAT Accountant

12 How long does it take to qualify?
Study at a pace to suit you. Take our computer based assessments whenever you feel ready. With previous experience and qualification(s), training can take two years or even less. It is possible to take a break from your training.

13 How will I be assessed? All AAT assessments are practical computer based assessments, available to sit periodically throughout the year. Assessments may be: computer marked – meaning you’ll get your provisional results straight away partially computer marked and partially human marked – you’ll get your results within six weeks human marked – you’ll get your results within six weeks This qualification also includes a synoptic assessment, which draws on and tests your understanding of connections between different topics covered across the qualification.

15 Help from your employer
There are a number of ways your employer can help you get the most from the course: Match your workload with your studies so you can put the theory into practice. Provide a mentor or appropriately experienced member of staff who can answer technical questions. Provide study leave to revise for assessments. Provide financial support for the course and study materials.
