1 Exploration and Colonization

2 Quick write If you lived in Europe during the 1500s and 1600s, would you have brought yourself or your family to “America” during the time of exploration and colonization? Why or why not? Explain in 3-5 sentences.

3 Main Idea In the 1400s, many Native American groups lived in north America. European colonization of North America brought settlers from several countries and permanently changed life on the continent.

4 Columbus sails the ocean blue
The late 15th century was the beginning of exploration for many European countries. Christopher Columbus- in 1492 Columbus sailed from Spain to the islands in the Caribbean Sea. He was sent to explore America Explorers wanted to find riches and land for their rulers.

5 European meets Natives
When Europeans first met with Native Americans, it would change their lives forever. European and Native American relations? Settlers carried diseases that the native people could not fight which resulted in many native Americans dying. The spread of settlements also pushed Native American groups off their land By the late 1500s, European countries had begun to colonize North America.

6 Colonization Colonize- build settlements and develop trade in lands that they controlled. Spain- formed St. Augustine in Florida England/British- Jamestown in Virginia and Plymouth in Massachusetts. Main European power in North America after fighting with France multiple times France-New France and Quebec in Canada

7 Slavery in the colonies
Plantations- large farms that grow crops for profit As production of cotton increased in the south, so did the number of slaves. Soon there would be thousands of slaves from Africa brought across the Atlantic ocean and forced to work manual labor.

11 Main Idea Settling Quebec
Conflict between Britain and France helped to shape the development of Canada.

12 Explorers Jacques Cartier- (1539) a French explorer who sailed into the Gulf f St. Lawrence in he claimed New France. His exploration opened new fur trade with Native Americans. He gave Canada his name Samuel de Champlain- in the early 1600s Champlain built Quebec which was the first major settlement of New France

13 Life in new France Farming- More difficult, bad soil, cold climate=shorter growing seas, most common job/trade, Population- smaller Relations with natives- Better than British, mostly peaceful contact

14 Voyageurs- adventurous men who traveled the area to trade with Native Americans for fur
Missionaries- sent by the Roman catholic Church to convince native Americans to accept Christianity-this contact was cooperative and usually peaceful

15 British Take Control French and Indian War-Marked the imperial struggle between Great Britain and France. It lasted from Cause: French expanded into the Ohio River Valley. There was conflict over who owned sections of the Ohio River. They were also struggling over which culture would gain more power in North America-Result: Great Britain conquered New France Quebec Act- After Britain gained control of New France they wanted to gain the French subjects loyalty. This act strengthened elements of French culture. It established a French system of law that allowed freedom of religion
