FIGURE 1 The patient, a man of 55 years of age with an anginal syndrome, possessed a normal resting electrocardiogram. The published two-step table called for 38 trips to be completed in three minutes. However, the patient stopped at the 20th trip because of a feeling of “impending pain” in the chest. The post-exercise tracing was negative (upper half). The next day, the test was repeated. This time the patient walked 35 trips and stopped because of real chest pain. “Ischemic” RS-T segment depressions appeared (lower half).
