Active Shooter Violence Among Co-Workers

SAFETY MINUTE The United States Department of Homeland Security defines the active shooter as "an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims”. Active Shooter Avoid Pay attention to your surroundings. Have an exit plan. Move away from the source of the threat as quickly as possible. Do not try to take your things with you, just escape if possible. Deny Keep distance between you and the source. Create barriers to prevent or slow down a threat from getting to you. Turn the lights off. Silence your cell phones. Shut down the cell phone light. Remain out of site and quiet, hiding behind large objects. Defend Click here for video If you cannot Avoid or Deny, be prepared to defend yourself. Be aggressive and commit to your actions. Create weapons out of obtainable objects. Do not fight fairly. 5 SAFETY MINUTE Among Co-Workers Some examples of the most frequently encountered situations among co-workers are: Concealing or using a weapon; Physical assault upon oneself or another person; Actions which damage, destroy, or sabotage property; Intimidating or frightening others; Harassing, stalking, or showing undue focus on another person; Physically aggressive acts, such as shaking fists at another person, kicking, pounding on desks, punching a wall, angrily jumping up and down, screaming at others; Verbal abuse including offensive, profane and vulgar language; and Threats (direct or indirect), whether made in person or through letters, phone calls, or electronic mail. There are many forms of workplace violence among co-workers. Unfortunately, the one form that receives the most attention is workplace homicide. But there are far more incidents of violence that do not involve casualties but have the same traumatic effects. Know where and who at your worksite to report all threats. Report any perceived or obvious threats immediately. Remove yourself from a threatening environment.
