1 Weather: What is weather? and What makes weather?

2 What is weather? Weather is the state of the atmosphere. Hot or cold
It is measured on a scale of: Hot or cold Wet or dry Calm or stormy Clear or cloudy And much more

3 What is climate? prevailing weather conditions of a region such as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.

4 Climate Map

5 What is the atmosphere? A blanket of air that surrounds the earth.
The atmosphere absorbs energy from the sun. Almost all weather occurs in the troposphere.

6 What is the atmosphere? The atmosphere is made up of the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and Thermosphere. Primarily composed of Nitrogen (~78%), Oxygen (~21%), and Argon (~1%) Atmosphere weighs 5600 TRILLION TONS

7

8 What makes the weather? 4 Ingredients Air The Sun The Earth Water

9 Air The atmosphere: is made up of air
lets in just enough of the sun’s rays to warm the earth during the day. holds in enough heat to keep us from freezing at night. holds water vapor to form clouds. Air Pressure Also called atmospheric pressure.

10 How do we know there is air? Can we prove it? Experiment

11 Review What is weather? The state of the atmosphere
What is the atmosphere? A blanket of air that surrounds the earth. What are the four ingredients of weather? Air, The Earth, The Sun, Water

12 Review What layer of the atmosphere does weather take place?
Troposphere What are some characteristics we learned about air in our lab?

13 The Sun Not all of the solar energy that goes through the atmosphere reaches the ground. Solar Radiation does one of three things Absorbed by the atmosphere Reflected back into space Reaches the earth and then is re- radiated back into the air as heat waves.

14 The Sun The sun gives off radiation and this radiation warms the air, oceans, and land. Radiation appears in the form of energy waves The types of waves from the sun are: Ones we see – light - visible Ones we feel – heat – infrared Ones we can’t see or feel X-rays Ultraviolet Radio waves

15 The Sun

16 The Sun

17 Sun - Temperature The heat from the sun causes a rise in temperature.
We tell temperature using a Fahrenheit or Celsius scale Thermometer – an instrument that measures temperature

18 Sun - Temperature
