A Typical Day Includes Literacy Skills Phonics Handwriting practice
Maths and English Topic work – cross curricular PE/Science/Art/Music/French etc. - Assembly Morning and afternoon break and lunchtime

What’s changed since Reception?
Gradual transition to whole class working English/Maths/Topic/Science work books Work books sent home (1/2 termly) - parent feedback encouraged! Whole class teaching – independent working.

Reading We promote and encourage a love of reading in Year One by...
- Library Visits - Mystery reader - Daily story time - ERIC - All children will be heard reading individually on a weekly basis by an adult. - Books will be changed once a week You can help by - Read regularly at home – sign in book Let them catch you reading!

English Daily phonics - Importance of phonic knowledge for reading and spelling. Phonics screening in Summer. Parent talk beforehand. - Engaging and immersive approach to literacy based around inspiring books.

Maths Practical maths before introducing more abstract concepts using research by the White Rose Hub. Moving away from worksheets – taking lots of photographs, encouraging children to explain their understanding. Importance of using and applying mathematics- solving problems. Learning for Mastery in Maths KS1Maths beyond the classroom.

Housekeeping Books changed weekly - Parent signatures. Keep in book bags at all times If there is anything that is important please hand it in to your class teacher or teaching assistant at the start of the day as we do not check book bags. Full named PE kit must be in school every day including trainers (not plimsoles). Arrivals - Diary kept by Mrs Wilson, Mrs Dixon and Miss Black. Teachers will be available after school. Please tell your TA or phone school if your child is going with someone else including Tree Tops. Named water bottles for children to drink during the day.

Housekeeping Check and empty book bags daily
No jewellery (earrings!) and hair tied back for PE No nail varnish. Simple hair accessories. Check and empty book bags daily All items named (incl. gloves and shoes) Coat in cold/wet weather – we will go outside whenever possible!

Home learning Learning maps will be on parent mail shortly.
In the red ‘home-school’ diaries you will find lots of information for helping your child at home in reading, writing and mathematics. Weekly newsletters will be put on parent mail on Fridays updating you on what we have been learning about in school. These will have English and Mathematics challenges. Word lists to practise reading and spelling at home. Wow! Stickers in the first half term. Half termly projects. Show and Tell – time tabled

What children need to bring to school
Reading book and home-school diary Named Water Bottle Named PE Kits (indoor and outdoor) Book bags rather than rucksacks No toys or trading cards. Keep reading book in bag at all times Book bags will be kept in drawers. They must be the school book bags. PE kits must be in school at all times – please ensure PE kits are weather appropriate. There will be no more formal show and tell sessions Please ensure that someone is notified about any changes to home collection
