10 Objective 1: Ensure high quality measurements of aerosol properties
EUSAAR Overview Objective 1: Ensure high quality measurements of aerosol properties NA1 Management of EUSAAR Overall project coordination, control of communication flow, responsibility for all project reports required, distribution of financial support. NA2 Standardised measurement protocols, intercomparisons and quality assurance of carbonaceous particulate compounds Developing standardised operating measurement and quality assurance procedures, spreading good practice, promoting common protocols at the different infrastructures for monitoring of organic and elemental carbon (OC/EC). NA3 Standardised measurement protocols, intercomparisons and quality assurance of aerosol physical properties (including nanoparticles) Developing standardised operating measurement and quality assurance procedures, spreading good practice, promoting common protocols at the different infrastructures for monitoring of fine particle size distributions. NA4 Standardised measurement protocols, intercomparisons and quality assurance of aerosol optical properties Developing standardised operating measurement and quality assurance procedures, spreading good practice, promoting common protocols at the different infrastructures for monitoring of aerosol optical scattering properties as scattering, absorption and remote sensing techniques. NA5 Standardised data protocol and central database Creation of a common database and making the data available. The database design and implementation strategy will ensure technical adequacy with regard to parameters and a user friendly form of data base delivery. Establish, by the end of the program, an on-line real time access to measurements. NA6 Audits and capacity building Auditing sampling protocols at infrastructures, promote good practices and diffusion of knowledge through workshops and training courses (joint with EMEP / GAW activities). EMEP Task Force on Measurements and Modelling, May 2006, Helsinki, Finland

11 Objective 2: Ensure diffusion and use of data and good practice

12 Objective 3 : future tools for monitoring and data transfer
EUSAAR Overview Objective 3 : future tools for monitoring and data transfer JRA1 Operational retrieval of vertical profiles of aerosol parameters from DOAS technique Develop an affordable methodology for aerosol column retrieval on the basis of MAX-DOAS. Includes quality assurance by simultaneous LIDAR measurements. JRA2 Building a new generation of humidity controlled aerosol monitors Develop standard procedures for aerosol hygroscopic growth determination and upgrade current instrumentation to improve humidity controlled operations. JRA3 Real-time acquisition and diffusion of aerosol parameters Develop a real time data collection, data transfer and online web solution for advanced aerosol measurements. EMEP Task Force on Measurements and Modelling, May 2006, Helsinki, Finland

13 Objective 4 : trans-national access of research infrastructures
EUSAAR Overview Objective 4 : trans-national access of research infrastructures High level of instrumentation available Long-record data bases long record of trans-national access. representative of a specific climate or ecosystems EMEP Task Force on Measurements and Modelling, May 2006, Helsinki, Finland

14 Beyond EUSAAR… 5 years to :
EUSAAR Overview Beyond EUSAAR… 5 years to : Implement an efficient and high quality network of stations Contribute to cost-effective new tools for atmospheric monitoring Develop an efficient synergy with other EU programs (ACCENT, EARLINET, EMEP, EUCAARI(?)) and within individual countries Ensure dissemination of data and knowledge outside of the EUSAAR consortium (station operators, users, monitoring programs) Consolidate current observation efforts across Europe to ensure their continuation beyond the frame of the project EMEP Task Force on Measurements and Modelling, May 2006, Helsinki, Finland
