7 So what exactly did Ms. McAnear ask you to do in AC Social Studies?

8 AC Social Studies DBQ Writing Assignment
Using the ideas and patterns you noticed in your resources, respond to the following prompt using specific (even quoted) examples. “In some parts of Africa, slavery and/or colonial administration had almost erased cultures and community with an ‘education’ and ‘civilizing’ program that gave Africans only a minimal skill set that served European colonial interests. Rebuilding from decades and centuries of this [oppression] has been a tough struggle.” - Bob Geldof, 2004

9 AC Social Studies DBQ Writing Assignment
Read and think about the Bob Geldof quote. In a 3-paragraph essay (5 sentences per paragraph), answer the questions with SPECIFICS from your timeline documents. 1. According to Geldof, what struggles do the African people have to overcome? 2. Looking at your timeline documents, is there evidence that Africa is becoming more stable? 3. Based on what you learned about Africa since Europeans left, do you agree with Geldof’s conclusions? Why or why not?

10 On the “Chronology of Post-Colonial Africa” timeline, highlight any events that would probably have involved some kind of violence or threat of violence What is the difference between “violence” and “the threat of violence”? What could cause this difference? Was there a certain decade that seemed to have more violence than the others? Which countries seem to have had the most violent history? How many countries have fought civil wars? According to the timeline, what positive events have occurred since European colonialism? Do any leaders/names repeat? What is his/her reputation regarding violence? Consider the 7 countries in our GPS elements – Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, Democratic Republic of the Congo, North Sudan, and South Sudan… Are any of these nations particularly violent?

11 Which years saw the most countries becoming independent?
On the “Dates of Independence in Africa: ” timeline, pay attention to details. Which years saw the most countries becoming independent? Did any Colonial powers free/lose all of their territory rapidly? Why might that be?

12 On the “African Leaders after Independence” chart, consider…
The length of the leader’s term (“Ruling Term”). How long were they in power? What does that suggest about their popularity or power? The “How Left Office” column. It has interesting insights into each leader’s life. Use “The Post-Independence Record” questions to help guide your thinking.

13 Did you answer the questions that you were asked?
A Common Mistake  Not polishing your response Did you answer the questions that you were asked?
