4 Department Name (View Master > Edit Slide 1) The Pittsburgh Academy 1787 Founded as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787 on what was then the American frontier, the University of Pittsburgh is the oldest continuously chartered U.S. institution of learning west of the Allegheny Mountains. 19 Oct 2009

The Salk polio vaccine was developed at Pitt. A Pitt professor was the first to isolate and identify vitamin C.
