1 Momentum

2 Discuss with a neighbor:
What comes to mind when you hear the word momentum? Watch this clip for a quick intro to momentum:

3 Momentum Momentum can be defined as “inertia in motion."
It is moving mass All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum Momentum depends on two things: mass and velocity Momentum = mass X velocity p = mv where p = momentum, m = mass and v=velocity

4 Which has more momentum and why?
Discuss with your neighbor and answer the above questions A 1400 kg truck traveling at 50 m/s Or a 500 kg car traveling at 50 m/s

5 Which has more momentum and why?
Discuss with your neighbor and answer the above questions A 1400 kg truck traveling at 10 m/s Or a 500 kg car traveling at 50 m/s

6 Which has more momentum and why?
Discuss with your neighbor and answer the above questions A 1400 kg truck traveling at 0 m/s Or a 500 kg car traveling at 0 m/s

7 When will the truck and the car have the same momentum?
Assume the 1400 kg truck is still traveling at 50 m/s

8 White board practice 1. Calculate the momentum of a 0.15 kg ball that is moving toward home plate at a velocity of 40m/s. 2. Which has greater momentum, a 2.0kg hockey puck moving east at 2.5m/s or a 1.3kg hockey puck moving south at 3.0m/s? 3. A track athlete throws a 2kg discus into a field with a velocity of 21m/s. What is the momentum of the discus? 4. Calculate the momentum of a 700g ball that is rolling down a ramp at 4.6m/s. 5. A cannon fires a 40.5kg shell toward a target and the shell moves with a velocity of 120m/s. Calculate the shell's momentum.
