2 Definitions Momentum The momentum of a body is equal to its mass multiplied by its velocity. Mass = 3 Kg Velocity = 2m/s Momentum = 3Kg X 2m/s = 6 Kg.m/s Units: Momentum unit is = N.s = kg.m/s

3 What is a momentum? We understand that when a car is running at 30 MPH can come to a stop quickly, whereas if it had been a semi truck then if has greater momentum. Or if the same car where to do 60MPH it travels a longer before it comes to a stop.

4 Impulse Impulse (I) of a force (also measured in N s) is equal to the change in momentum of a body which a force causes. Impulse = change in momentum = force × time We need a event to find Impulse See the example: hitting a base ball or. collision of billiard balls.

5 Example We have the following scenario (a ball of mass 3kg is moving to the right with velocity 3m/s and a ball of mass 1kg is moving to the left with velocity 2m/s): m/s Momentum of (3) = 9 N.s and for (1) = 2 N.s. The initial momentum.
