Welcome! It’s the 2nd day of school!! Attendance to come shortly…

2

3 For those of you that don’t know…
My name is Mr. Goodnight, and this is 6th Grade Social Studies If you are in the wrong place… SHAME! DISHONOR! If you are in the right place, welcome! The goal of this year is to introduce you to the history of the world, from the beginning of man ALLLLLLL the way to Medieval Times (around the 1450s). This class is very much so modeled after the class you will take as high school sophomores/juniors, so take that for what it’s worth.

4 Things you will need 1) A 5-subject notebook (with 150-180 pages)
2) Tape 3) A good attitude (No, really. A good attitude)

5 Welcome back! Here is some advice from previous students:
1) Hard work is rewarded 2) Follow Mr. G’s only rule 3) You’ll learn a lot about life in here 4) You don’t have to follow your friends if they’re making bad decisions 5) This class is NOT easy. 6) This class is easy if you try 7) Food = Extra Credit 8) Be ready for, literally, anything and everything 9) Be ready to work as hard as you will in high school 10) You’ll never have to do something “just ‘cause” 12) Pay attention – you’ll be completely lost if you don’t 13) Mr. G really wants what is best for you

6 Things you’ll use: 1) The containers on the board to turn in work
2) The Missing Work container to get work you missed 3) The website

7 Things you’ll use: The board by my desk!
The Table of Contents: This will show you the title of the work we will do that day, the day we do it, and the page it should be on in your notebook. This is VERY helpful if you miss a day or two! The board by the door: The date: Is the date for that day… Duh Essential Questions: You will write this on the top of the page in your notebook. You should be able to answer this by the end of the day Know/Be able to do: These are the skills or knowledge you will have after completing the lesson Activities: What we’re doing that day!

8 Continued… Unit Title: The title of the Unit we will be studying
Statement of Inquiry: The statement you should be able to make and understand (WITH EXAMPLES) at the end of the Unit – this guides our learning Global Contexts: The things that we talk about in Social Studies, but that we also talk about in your other classes Key Concepts: The main concept you will be able to understand and relate to what we learned after the Unit is over Related Concepts: Other concepts you will be able to understand and relate to what we learned

9 ACTIVITIES: What we will do that day
STATEMENT OF INQUIRY: Is the statement we want you to understand at the end of the unit GLOBAL CONTEXT: The things you will understand at the end of the Unit that apply to more than just social studies Think of it like this: ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: The big questions that the skills and knowledge you learned from the activities that you will apply to help you answer those questions KEY/RELATED CONCEPTS: The concepts you should be able to understand at the end of the Unit KNOW/BE ABLE TO DO: What the activities you do in class with help you learn and be able to do Inquiry Questions: Questions you will be able to answer at the end of the Unit ACTIVITIES: What we will do that day OBJECTIVES: What you should be able to understand at the end of the Unit

10 Some things to keep in mind:
Your desk is your desk, your neighbor’s desk is their desk, my desk is my desk. Your stuff is yours, their stuff is theirs, and my stuff is mine. It’s like window-shopping – looking is okay, but you cannot touch

11 The Introduction… I have ONE rule: That is RESPECT.
This classroom is based upon MUTUAL respect. Respect for me, your peers, the work you do, and yourself. You are in this class for 180 days, and you will only get out of this class what you put in. I don’t have rules, but I do have some expectations and norms that we will help create together to have a great experience! Things that WON’T be tolerated 1) Being disrespectful 2) Being Lazy 3) Not being YOUR best

12 Is it kind? Is it the truth? Is it respectful? Is it necessary?
Like my grandma said… Is it kind? Is it the truth? Is it respectful? Is it necessary?

13 About this class: I will NOT be easy. My job is not to baby you – it is to prepare you for middle school, high school and college You WILL read in this class. You will be given difficult material that you may not understand. You WILL be supported. My main goal is to support you however you need it. I am NOT better than you just because I’m standing in the front of the class. Expect a quiz around once every 5-8 days (week to week and a half) Expect to analyze and discuss. You cannot get better by just sitting – you must do! You will change seats. Constantly. EVERYONE. WILL. Participate.

14 Other things around the room
Classroom Expectations: These are the things you are expected to do without being asked. Failure to do these things could result in a consequence (like a call home, MIR, etc.) 1) Having your Notebook, Pencil, and other materials BEFORE you walk into class 2) Immediately sitting in your assigned seat (once you get them) 3) Begin copying down the day’s Title and Essential Questions into your Notebook 4) Doing a Warm-Up, if there is one, immediately after you finish writing down the title and EQs 5) Be on the given task at all times! You should not need a reminder to do what you are supposed to be 6) Respect everyone and everything

15 Expectations: Be respectful. All of the time. Come to class prepared
Come to class ready to participate Leave your problems at the door “It’s okay to have a bad day. But it’s unacceptable to have a bad life.” You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control…? How you REACT!

16 So… A little bit about me:
I graduated from Western Carolina I got my Masters from UNCC in December I’m a HUGE Panthers and UNC Fan! I got married in Disney World I have two dogs – Deacon and Moo And I have a baby boy coming in October!

17 ACTIVITY!! You’ll each get a laminated picture. Your job is to find the person in the room that has the other half of your famous person! Once you find that person, get this information: The name of your famous person Why they are famous The name of your partner One fun thing they did this summer Then, with your partner, find other “famous people” that are similar to you. They will share something in common. Once you find your group, get this information: The names of your famous people What they all have in common The names of your group members Something interesting or special about them

18 Your first grade in this class:
You will help introduce your classmates to everyone else! Name Something they did this summer Something interesting about them

19 Your Notebook and The Table of Contents
I will keep a Table of Contents going on the board by my desk. Everyday, you will be expected to come in and do two things at the beginning of every class: 1) Check for Essential Questions 2) Check the Table of Contents If there are new Essential Questions, or topics in the Table of Contents, you are expected to right them down as soon as you enter class In your Table of Contents, you will list the Topic and the Date (as I have done) On that page in your notebook, you will write the Title on the top line About the title, in the blank space, you will write whatever the Essential Question(s) are. I will also keep an electronic copy of this on Canvas (we will look more at this tomorrow) You are expected to keep this up-to-date DAILY. It helps you stay organized and on top of things in the class. Be warned – Notebook Checks are frequent and unexpected!

20 Your Notebook Let’s set it up really quickly: THEN!
Open it up. Write “Table of Contents” on the top, and on the left hand side, number 1 through 25 On the back of the first page, number 26 through 50 On the front of the second page, number 51 through 75 On the back of the second page, number 76 through 100 On the front of the third page, number 101 through 125 On the back of the third page, number 126 through 150 THEN! In the top right hand corner of the fourth page, write the number 1 On the front of the fifth page, write the number 2 On the front of the sixth page, write the number 3, And so on, and so on, and so on… I’ll give you about 5 minutes/until the end of class to do as much as you can – no rush!
