2 Language and Speech - Caitlin
The play displays the connections between a person’s speech and their identity Act II pg. 31: Doolittle: Morning, Governor. I come to talk about a serious matter, Governor. Higgins: Brought up in Hounslow. Mother Welsh, I should think. Also displays connections between speech and social class Act II pg. 41: Higgins: “And that is the sort of ordeal poor Eliza has to go through for months before we meet her again on her first appearance in London society of the professional class.”

3 Education and Intelligence -
Characters exemplify different forms of intelligence Higgins- An educated and intelligent character but approaches others with a kind of academic detachment. Eliza- Quick learner and pupil that that seeks an education Mr. Doolittle- Lacks the education that Higgins and Pickering have, but is the only character to criticise the middle-class morality and the hierarchy in England

5 Colonel Pickering Colonel Pickering is a gentleman who helps Higgins with teaching Eliza Pickering was somewhat of a sidekick to Higgins Pickering treated Eliza with respect and was understanding unlike Higgins while teaching Eliza became a lady because of how Pickering treated her and she listen to his teaching because of the respect he gave her. “No.no. Never mind crying a little, Miss Doolittle: you are doing very well; and the lessons won't hurt. I promise you I won't let him drag you round the room by your hair”(Pickering 41). “But it made such a difference to me that you didn't do it… I will always be a flower girl to professor Higgins… but I know I am be a lady to you, because you always treat me as a lady. And always will”(Eliza 80).

6 Ezra D. Wannafeller - Itzel
Wealthy American Had Alfred Doolittle go from common dustman to middle class by being willing to give him 3 thousand pounds a year to lecture for the Wannafeller Moral Reform League when he died. Act 5 pg. 74 “ yes: he’s dead; and I’m done for now did you or did you not write a letter to him to say that the most original moralist at present in England to the best of your knowledge, was Alfred Doolittle, a common dustman?”

7 1. A playwright has many tools at hand for developing character
1. A playwright has many tools at hand for developing character. In the development of a minor character in Pygmalion, show one of these conventions has been used to make the character memorable in spite of being minor. A playwright can use monologues to develop characters over the course of their play. In Shaw’s play Pygmalion, the minor character of Alfred Doolittle is developed in Act II through the use of large and small monologues. He is made memorable in the way that he describes himself and how he accepts his social status in society. He is a direct contrast to characters such as Eliza who strive to rise up in society Shaw uses Doolittle’s monologues to present the morals of this character

8 Act 2 (31-38) Doolittle Diction Dialogue ¨, Governor”
Giving us an idea of his background - lower class with treating the gentlemen of higher class with respect Dialogue Have you no morals? Can’t afford them Shows the self centered side of this man, by him wanting something out of Higgins Act 2 (31-38) Doolittle We will be looking at a part in scene 2 that shows this characterization. In this section Eliza’s father, Mr.Doolittle, arrives at the house of Higgins after hearing from others that his daughter is going to be living there. So he comes to claim some sort of justice from Higgins and Pickering. We see the characterization of Doolittle in this scene. FIrst with diction, we see his class being of the lower working kind, by him using governer at every chance given. That shows respect for the gentle men of upper class. Then theres the big part of characterization with dialogue. When Higgins asks Mr. Doolittle, “Have you no morals?” his response, “Can’t afford them,” shows us how self centered he is. As he throws whatever morals he has for the money he asks from Higgins.

9 Monologue by Doolittle
Gives background to Doolittle’s life Showing that he has always been lower class, working hard Criticism of the middle class morality Treating him lesser and not giving him money Yet charging him just as much as any other person His plan on spending the money He’s not wasteful, and will enjoy as much of it as possible Act 2 Monologue by Doolittle He then goes on to criticize the morals of the middle class when they try to deny him the money. The dialogue shows us that he has always been in the lower working class and has dealt a lot with middle class as such. With the middle class treating him lower and as an undeserving man of charity. Yet when it comes to charging for something, they treat him as any person and charge the same. This really gives insight on the lower class perspective and that makes him memorable. As the majority of people would think with the middle class mindset. Then he goes on to say that he would not save the money but spend it as much. Which tells us that he wants to enjoy the most out of life and is fine with a momenjt

10 His refusal of a ten He does know his limitation on money, being unable to handle that much His views on marriage Show his misogynistic side with believing Men deserve the better of the deal as women are by nature not going to enjoy it His opinion on money Tells us he does not want to rise like Eliza, but is content to being in his current social status
