2 A Safe and Healthy Work Environment
Infection Control To promote a safe and healthful work environment the Division has established some general health and safety requirements. Training on this topic is required for all Division staff. The topics covered in this training are listed opposite this page. INFECTION CONTROL General Precautions Hand washing Break rooms and kitchens Tuberculosis Blood borne pathogens Infection control Lice Bed bugs Employee medical evaluations Employee with a communicable disease Reporting communicable diseases Occupational exposures

3 General Precautions – The Office
HAND WASHING Adherence to hand washing and or use of a hand sanitizer have been shown to: terminate outbreaks of infectious disease; reduce transmission of antimicrobial resistant organism; and, reduce overall infection rates.

4 Break Rooms and Kitchens
Employee break rooms and kitchens with counters, tables, dish drains and/or sinks must be kept free from food debris. Use paper towels and disposable: table cloths dishwashing cloths Clean surfaces with soap and/or disinfectant and hot water. Wash dirty dishes, eating utensils and other food prep items with soap and hot water immediately.

5 Refrigerators and Food Storage
BREAKROOM Clean the refrigerator with soap or disinfectant and hot water using a disposable cleaning cloth (aka paper towel) weekly so that they are free of food debris. Remove food stored in the refrigerator after 1 week. Storage containers must tightly seal. Don’t store food and drinks not requiring refrigeration on the floor. Keep trash cans clean by washing them with soap or disinfectant and hot water weekly.

7 Tuberculosis Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis is a potentially serious infectious disease that usually affects a person’s lungs but can also affect any part of the body including the kidney, brain and spine. TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The TB bacteria are put into the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected. This topic is covered more thoroughly in The Division’s required course on “TB and Bloodborne Pathogens”

8 Lice LICE Lice are tiny, wingless parasite insects that live among human hairs and feed on extremely small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. They are not dangerous but they are highly transmittable from person to person.

9 More On Bed Bugs BED BUGS only come out at night to feed
They live in cracks and crevices and only come out at night to feed Common locations for bedbug bites are the face, neck, hands, and arms. A bedbug bite is painless and is generally not noticed. They are not known to spread disease BED BUGS

10 Bed Bugs More on bed bugs…
Bed bugs are small wingless insects that feed upon the blood of warm blooded animals, such as rodents, birds, bats and pets and humans. Young bugs are about the size of a poppy seed and adults are about ¼ inch long. Their bodies are oval and flat and their color ranges from nearly white to deep brown.

11 Removal - Employee REMOVAL
Removal of bed bugs from clothing is best resolved by consulting with a licensed pest control operator as soon as possible. Removal of lice is accomplished by pursuing medical evaluation and following recommended treatment. If an employee feels they have been exposed to bed bugs: Remove outerwear (jackets, shoes) and place them into a sealable plastic bag prior to entering the vehicle, home or office. Always take the following action: Consult with the supervisor Consult with Personnel prior to taking action for approval and referral to an appropriate state vendor.

12 Removal - Providers REFERRAL
For community providers of supported living arrangements, staff may provide referral information on licensed pest control operators for removal of bed bugs:

13 Exposure to A Communicable Disease or Other Condition
If an employee feels they have been exposed to a communicable disease or other condition that is transmittable by person – to – person contact, they shall: Discuss it with the supervisor Discuss it with Personnel Collaborate on the need for medical evaluation Complete Worker’s Compensation paperwork Suspend home visits until medically cleared

14 Exposure to Lice If an employee is notified that a Participant has a
communicable disease or other condition transmitted by person – to person contact they shall: Notify their supervisor Refer the Participant to a medical professional if not already under care for the condition Employee may suspend home visits until Participants are cleared by medical personnel.

15 Participant Response If the Participant chooses not to
pursue medical evaluation or treatment, in accordance with NRS , employee health must be protected. Services to the Participant cannot be terminated for refusal to seek medical evaluation/treatment for a communicable disease or condition transmitted by person – to – person contact. However: Participant attendance in services funded by ADSD out of the home cannot be resumed until they have been treated by a medical professional and determined free of contagious disease. Utilize the team process regarding how to proceed.

16 Out of Home Residential Services
Acceptance of Participants into out – of - home residential placements with a known communicable, contagious or infections disease occurs contingent upon the nature of the condition or disease in order to prevent subsequent infections. In making the determination: assess the capability of the provider to facilitate treatment; and, adequately safeguard other individuals. from the contagious disease Treatment Access Safeguard

17 Prior to Acceptance PRIOR TO ACCEPTANCE
Any person diagnosed as having a contagious or infectious disease must be: evaluated by a licensed medical provider within the last 30 days; and be pre-approved by the program manager prior to acceptance into a residential service.

18 EMPLOYEE WITH A COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
An employee returning to work after an absence due to a communicable disease must: Follow the advice of their medical professional Provide written medical clearance from a licensed medical professional as requested

19 Communicable Disease Communicable diseases are defined as infectious diseases transmittable from person to person by direct contact with an affected individual or the individual’s discharges or by indirect means (something that can carry germs) If you know someone has a communicable disease and they are not under care of a professional health care provider, you must report it to the local health authority per NRS 441A.150. Please refer to Policy 4 – 2 for a list of communicable diseases:

20 Occupational Exposures
NRS If an employee has been exposed to a hazard and the Division considers a medical examination necessary, the cost of the examination must be paid by the Division. The results of the examination must be furnished only to the Division and, at the request of the employee, to their personal physician. EXPOSED
