1 We Are Family We All Make Choices
Over 1.5 billion families in the world today About 7.6 billion people Roughly 10.5 million people in Prison in the world We are beginning around 2319 BC The chapter covers at least 175 yrs Some calendars have it closer to 400 years Dr. James Boice calls it “a chapter that is surely one of the most interesting and important in the entire Word of God” William F. Albright (not a conservative) said that this chapter “stands absolutely alone in ancient literature, without a remote parallel, even among the Greeks, where we find the closest approach to a distribution of peoples in genealogical framework.... The Table of Nations remains an astonishingly accurate document” “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

2 But it all started with Noah and his relationship with God
How did it go wrong Remember – before Noah Billions of people Book of Jasher – Josephus – Jubelies All of the followers of God – died off What are our choices “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

3 It is About to Begin Again
10 This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, who themselves had sons after the flood. Only 17 grandsons are mentioned “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

4 Japheth 2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek and Tiras. Ezekiel 38:6 also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops—the many nations with you. Ezekiel 38:2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him Revelation 20:8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

5 Over 11 million square miles
Gomer: The descendants of Gomer generally settled in what is today Wales and Great Britain. Magog: The descendants of Magog became the Russian peoples. Madai: The descendants of Madai became the Medes Javan: became the Greeks. It is also interesting to note that one of Javan’s sons Tarshish has become what is today modern day Spain. Tarshish is mentioned in a prophecy in the Book of Isaiah 60:1-12. Tubal: A bit of controversy on this one. However, I’ll go with Josephus’s take on the matter who identified the descendants of Tubal with the Iberians, that is, the inhabitants of a tract of country between the Caspian and Euxine Seas, which nearly corresponded to the modern Georgia. Tiras: From Tiras came a group of people known as the Thracians who became the Macedonians from whom Alexander the Great came, Meschech: The descendants of Meshech were believed to have originated from the North-east of Asia Minor, particularly in the area that is now Turkey. Then they travelled north and settled in Rosh, which is modern day Russia. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

6 Gomer 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah.
Galatia. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus records that the people who were called Galatians or Gauls in his day They migrated westward to what are now called France and Spain. For many centuries France was called Gaul, after the descendants of Gomer. migrated further to what is now called Wales.  Welsh historian, Davis, records a traditional Welsh belief that the descendants of Gomer ‘landed on the Isle of Britain from France, about three hundred years after the flood’.2 He also records that the Welsh language is called Gomeraeg (after their ancestor Gomer). Encyclopaedia Britannica says that the Armenians traditionally claim to be descended from Togarmah and Ashkenaz Moved into  Turkey. The name Turkey probably comes from Togarmah. Others of them migrated to Germany. Ashkenaz is the Hebrew word for Germany. March Anti-Semitic crime increases in Germany April Germany Has a New Anti-Semitism Problem May Germany’s dangerous ‘new anti-Semitism’ “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittites and the Rodanites. 5 (From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.) Javan, is the Hebrew word for Greece. Alexander’s influence is still affecting us today – even in the church

Phut, the name of Noah’s next grandson is the Hebrew name for Libya Canaan, is the Hebrew name for the general region later called by the Romans Palestine, i.e. modern Israel and Jordan “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

11 “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

12 Cush The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka.
Cush clan mentioned 55 times in the OT Interesting no mention of Nimrod Jewish tradition – Noah took the animal skins that God made Adam and Eve on the Ark Ham stole those and later passed them down to Cush Cush later passed them down to Nimrod – his son in his old age “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

13 Raamah The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.
Ezekiel 38:13  13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all her villages[a]will say to you, “Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?”’ Referring to Ezekiel 38:1-3  38 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of[a] Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him 3 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lordsays: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[b] Meshek and Tubal. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

14 Nimrod 8 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar.11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah— which is the great city. Nimrod was not wicked in his youth. On the contrary, when a young man he used to sacrifice to Yhwh the animals which he caught while hunting His great success in hunting (comp. Gen. x. 9) was due to the fact that he wore the coats of skin which God made for Adam and Eve (Gen. iii. 21). These coats were handed down from father to son, and thus came into the possession of Noah, who took them with him into the ark, whence they were stolen by Ham. The latter gave them to his son Cush, who in turn gave them to Nimrod, and when the animals saw the latter clad in them, they crouched before him so that he had no difficulty in catching them. The people, however, thought that these feats were due to his extraordinary strength, so that they made him their king Jasher 29. And Cush also concealed them from his sons and brothers, and when Cush had begotten Nimrod, he gave him those garments through his love for him, and Nimrod grew up, and when he was twenty years old he put on those garments. 30. And Nimrod became strong when he put on the garments, and God gave him might and strength, and he was a mighty hunter in the earth, yea, he was a mighty hunter in the field, and he hunted the animals and he built altars, and he offered upon them the animals before the Lord. According to another account, when Nimrod was eighteen years old, war broke out between the Hamites, his kinsmen, and the Japhethites. The latter were at first victorious, but Nimrod, at the head of a small army of Cushites, attacked and defeated them, after which he was made king over all the people on earth. It was then, elated by so much glory, that Nimrod changed his behavior toward Yhwh and became the most flagrant idolater i. He was a hunter of men - a warrior. It was through his ability to fight and kill and rule ruthlessly that his kingdom of the Euphrates valley city states was consolidated." (Boice) ii. A Jerusalem Targum says: "He was powerful in hunting and in wickedness before the Lord, for he was a hunter of the sons of men, and he said to them, 'Depart from the judgment of the Lord, and adhere to the judgment of Nimrod!' Therefore it is said: 'As Nimrod the strong one, strong in hunting, and in wickedness before the Lord.’ “ Jewish legend: "The great success that attended all of Nimrod's undertakings produced a sinister effect. Men no longer trusted in God, but rather in their own prowess and ability, an attitude to which Nimrod tried to convert the whole world." “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”
