2 Reservist Types Selected Reserves (SELRES)
Drills 1 weekend/month & minimum 14 days per year Active Drilling for points/pay Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) Active Status Pool (ASP) Voluntary Training Unit (VTU) *Talk about being able to schedule/reschedule their own drill weekends in NSIPS. The difference between regular drill and flex drill units and NOSC’s who have Alpha or Bravo DWE, depending on the size and location of the NOSC. *Poll and see if anyone knows what the points system composes of? Answer: AD/20years = 1 point/day x 20years = 7,300 points (for 50% of base pay for 20 years) *Poll and see if anyone knows how many points membership points a reservist gets just for being a member? Answer: 15 ASP is a pool of people who can be recalled or volunteer to be on active duty. The average IRR member will not get recalled and most finish their MSO without hearing from the Navy. VTU is usually consisting of people who owe the Navy more time and are typically drilling for no pay, but are eligible for certain types of orders in which they can be paid. VTU members are still required to participate in PFA’s and be deployment ready at all times. Information regarding ASP and IRR can be found at

3 Benefits to Affiliation
Deployment deferment period Tri-Care Reserve Select medical/dental coverage Retains SGLI coverage (same price as AD component) Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserves (MGIB-SR) Navy COOL certifications DoD Base Privileges (MWR, Commissary, NEX/BX) Affiliation bonus (Check current NAVADMIN for eligibility) Retirement retainer pay/benefits Paid travel while on orders There are two ways to join SELRES. The first being through CWAY and requesting a quota through the community manager and the other through a Reserve Recruiter. If your Sailors are requesting through CWAY and cannot get one within 90-days of EAOS, the reserve recruiter will have to be the main POC for the member to affiliate. If they get picked up through CWAY, they will receive a member via Career Transition Office in Millington, TN. This office was created to do exactly what’s in it’s name and assist members making the transition from Active Duty to the Reserves. From a personal perspective, it was a load of crap when I made the transition back in After they received my reenlistment contract, they disappeared off the face of the earth. I received no orders, no reporting location or any information that would tell me where/who to report to. I will say however, that after my most recent dealings with them, the process is more refined, but not without it’s flaws. The information was not 100% accurate and we had to do a lot of leg work to take care of our Sailor making the transition. Know the battles you need to fight for information. What do you do for a frocked Sailor or a Sailor who still has MSO time to fulfill? All of these benefits are great, but are only as great as your Sailors make them. In many ways (and I say this with a grain of salt) reserve members work harder than the Active Duty component, but you have to remember why your Sailors are considering making the switch. Is it a family circumstance, relocation issue, have they just had it with their job or the Navy forcing a hand? Maintaining a civilian career and full-part time commitment to the Navy can present it’s challenges, but staying educated on how the reserves support the active component is the best thing CCC’s can do to help our Sailors make successful transitions from AC2RC.

4 Erasing the Reservist Stigma
Reservists get a bad reputation for being lazy, worthless, a waste of space … etc. Admit it, most people don’t fully understand who they are and what they do. The reserves is full of people at all rank levels and a major networking tool for Sailors and for you too. It is a very relaxed way of life, but is made up of members just trying to make a life like the rest of us. Now more than ever, there are more people who have completed time in the Reserves and have come back on AD for one reason or another. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them and have them talk to your interested Sailors. Here on NAS Jacksonville, the reserve recruiters work at NOSC Jacksonville. They do a reserve affiliation brief on the first Thursday of every month. They are a great tool and can provide a lot of information. ENCOURAGE DON’T DISCOURAGE!
