U.S. (1919) Charles Schenk: an official of the U.S. socialist party distributed leaflets that called the draft a “deed against humanity” & compared conscription to slavery, urging conscripts to “assert your rights” Schenck convicted of sedition & sentenced to prison Argued conviction, punishment, & law violated his right of free speech
