1 Year 7 Summer 1 The Tudors Key terms Armada -A fleet of Spanish ships sent to invade England Catholic -A traditional Christian, before the Reformation all Christians were Catholic Church of England -The official religion of England, with the Monarch as it’s head, not the Pope Dissolution of the Monasteries -Closing down the monasteries Dynasty - line of monarchs who have inherited their position Heir- The person who will inherit the throne Monarch – A royal leader of a country, for example, a king or queen. Monastery - A religious building were monks live Pope -The man in charge of all of the Catholics throughout the world. Protestant -The name given to the people who were protesting against the Catholic church Reformation -The idea of reforming the church to make it less corrupt

Protestant -The name given to the people who were protesting against the Catholic church Reformation -The idea of reforming the church to make it less corrupt For more about the Tudors: Key people Henry VII – The first monarch in the Tudor dynasty who defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in Henry united the Houses of Lancaster and York, combining their rose emblems to create a Tudor rose. Henry VIII – Caused a break from the Catholic Church and formed his own church, the Church of England. Married 6 times. Two of Henry’s wives were beheaded for treason. Edward VI -Became King when he was just nine. A strict Protestant but had poor health and died when he was just 15. Lady Jane Grey – chosen as the nearest relative who was also a Protestant to become queen after Edward’s death. Jane was on the throne for only 9 days and then, Mary I had her executed for treason. Mary I –Nicknamed Bloody Mary, as a devout Catholic Mary punished Protestants and had more than 300 of them burned alive. Mary Queen of Scots -Cousin of Elizabeth and a Catholic. Executed for allegedly plotting against Elizabeth I -She tried to keep both Catholics & Protestants happy Left: Henry VIII Right: Edward VI, Henry’s son.
