4 Experienced and Qualified staff
Minimum Lowland Leader qualified Trained D of E Supervisors Up to 20 years experience working within the D of E programme Years of expedition experience in the UK and around the world Extensive knowledge of all areas where expeditions are delivered Full reconnaissance and risk assessments of areas and routes

5 Expedition Training day
This day will be focussed around expedition skills and preparing for the practice and qualifying expedition. It will cover 5 main topics. Navigation and route planning Camp craft (cooking and tent pitching) Kit, Bag packing and rucksack fitting Food and nutrition First aid A minimum of 4 qualified staff will be dedicated to the day to ensure every group gets thorough training. A programme and list of information will be sent out prior to this training day.

6 In school/centre route planning (Bronze and Silver)
This will be an afternoon after school where members of Lambourne End staff team will visit the school or group base to aid groups with route planning for their qualifying expedition. The session will last approximately 1hour 30 mins. A staff member will be assigned to each group to ensure that the route for qualifying is completed

7 Practice (Bronze, Silver)
This weekend is designed to simulate the process of the qualifying weekend allowing the students to experience an expedition first hand and put the skills learned during the training day into practice. Bronze – this will last 2 days and 1 night. Each day the group must complete 6 hours of planned activity. Silver – this will last 3 days and 2 nights. Each day the group must complete 7 hours of planned activity. Both of these expeditions will be completed on foot. On Day 1 the students will be supervised. Day 2 will be completed under remote supervision.

8 Qualifying expeditions
Each group will receive an emergency phone which is to remain switched on but only to be used in the event of an emergency or when a supervisor or assessor is attempting to make contact. Personal phones will be sealed or handed in to the assessor prior to the commencement of the expedition. The group will abide by the 20 conditions laid down by the D of E or the expedition for the whole group will be terminated.

10 Basecamp support Communications On the ground
Leader phones - Each leader/supervisor will be equipped with mobile phones. Group phones - Supervisors will make sure that each group possesses at least 2 mobile phones (personal or emergency, should they need to contact emergency services or supervisors) Centre phone – A member of staff will be based back at centre with the centre phone as a contact for supervisors. On the ground Expedition Leader – This member of staff will be in charge of the whole expedition ensuring its ultimate success. Basecamp Co-ordinator – There will be a member of staff who will be in contact with the expedition team at all times and the school when necessary. This person will also be in contact with parents if needs be. Supervisors – qualified and experienced Lambourne End staff will be remotely supervising groups ensuring that checkpoints and campsites are reached.

11 Resources The DofE coordinator for the school and the participants will be provided with learning resources, kit lists and all information necessary prior to the expedition. This will also include emergency procedure and first aid cards for the students to carry with them on expedition. Included in this will be essential contact information.
