2 Advanced VIRGO Project Pisa Group Activity
Outline Advanced VIRGO Project Pisa Group Activity Support from INFN Pisa branch Financial Requests 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

3 End of VIRGO ITF The scientific activity of the first generation ITF finished at the end of 2011: - VSR4 concluded in September. November 2011: External Injection Bench (EIB-SAS) first installation for AdV within the Laser laboratory: - based on new technology for VIRGO; - pre-commissioning using the ITF. Site preparation activity started in December. 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

4 VIRGO+MS Sensitivity 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

5 Toward AdV Goals: Sensitivity improved by 10 (optimized for BNS 134 Mpc) Start the data taking with Advanced LIGO (2015) 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

6 Advanced VIRGO Project
The interferometer up-grade is based on Marginally Stable Recycling Cavity (MSRC) TDR finished in April 2012 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

7 MSRC for AdV After a long scientific and technical discussion within the Collaboration, the MSRC optical scheme has been chosen for the following reasons: - more experience with this configuration; - based on the same suspension system; - no mirror with small RoC (avoiding alignment and positioning difficulties); - minor time schedule problem (re-start in 2015); - fits in the same infrastructure (minor changes); - less expensive. 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

8 Group Activity: commissioning & VIRGO+MS
During the commissioning phases the group has been deeply involved in the following tasks: - ITF locking - ITF alignment - mirror suspension control - superattenuator maintenance and interfaces - control electronics for suspensions - phase camera - vacuum system upgrades - noise study of the ITF 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

9 Data Analysis: stochastic background
Search for gravitational waves that can be modeled only as a stochastic process. Joint use of VIRGO & LIGO data is mandatory in this case (correlation). Cosmological backgrounds - Upper limits for early universe evolution models - Detection, study of anisotropies - This is the main field of activity. Interesting upper limits available. LSC/VIRGO collaboration. An upper limit on the stochastic gravitational-wave background of cosmological origin. Nature 460, (20 August 2009) - LIGO/VIRGO joint analysis published LSC/VIRGO collaboration. An upper limit on a stochastic gravitational wave background using LIGO and Virgo interferometers at Hz. Phys. Rev. D85, (2012) Astrophysical backgrounds - Star formation history - Population statistic Resp. Giancarlo Cella Pisa group: - Contributions to S5/VSR1 LIGO/VIRGO analysis - Porting of LIGO data analysis pipeline on GRID (in progress) - Analysis on GRID (VIRGO pipeline) - Software & hardware injections - Analysis of S6/VSR2 data (under review) - Study of constraints on extended gravitation theories (in progress) - Study of backgrounds from cosmic strings populations (specialistic Thesis about that just started) Future (next year): - First production release of data analysis pipeline for extended gravitation theories (fall of this year). Application to S6/VSR2 data. 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

10 Data Analysis: continuous waves
Pisa group: - Implementation and application of a Doppler demodulation algorithm. Tested on the Pisa GRID farm Computationally efficient Well suited for semi-targeted search S. Braccini, G. Cella, I. Ferrante, D. Passuello, O. Torre. Resampling technique to correct for the Doppler effect in a search for gravitational waves. Phys. Rev. D83, (2011) - Semitargeted search to the RX J supernova remnant (in progress, one dedicated Ph.D. candidate) Future (next year): - Finalization of RX J - Starting project (with FERMI-LAT): unveiling the physics of compact objects with joint observations of GW and electromagnetic radiation. FIRB under evaluation Search for monochromatic gravitational waves. Not really monochromatic: - Doppler shift induced by detector’s motion - Spin down (or spin up) Several strategies: - Blind search (heavy computational effort, not pursued in Pisa) - Semi-targeted search (source position known, frequency unknown) - Targeted search (source position and frequency known) 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

11 Activity for AdV and beyond
Important changes have been introduced in the AdV project with respect to the baseline  impact on SA Scattered light mitigation: - use of large baffles; - all science-mode photodiodes in vacuum and seismically isolated. Laser: from solid state to rod technology. More complex Thermal Compensation System. Payloads: new mechanical design, no recoil mass, actuation cage connected to F7. 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

12 Superattenuators for AdV
With MSRC optical scheme for AdV the Group activity is focused on: - F7 re-design (5 filters + monitoring systems) due to the new geometry of the payloads; - SA up-grades for tilt control (6 new IP and 18 PZT actuators); - new SA for SR mirror (a complete suspension: IP + 6 filters); - seismic isolation to be improved on short SA with an additional mechanical filter (3 filters); - control electronics to be re-built (̴ 250 boards); - design of the new SIB (mechanics). 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa

13 Complementary activity: SAFE
The SAFE Project is based on the upgrades devoted to improve the feed-back control performance of the SA; A long VIRGO SA (with minor differences) to be used as a test bench has been assembled (filters not yet installed) on EGO site with: - more rigid pre-isolator stage (new IP with monolithic legs) - new Top Stage platform (no spurious resonances) - 3 PZT actuators (under the IP feet) for tilt control and vertical ID improvements; Facility to be used during AdV Commissioning. 2 July 2012 F. Frasconi - INFN Pisa
