12. Former State Department Official – convicted of perjury (lying in court) for his alleged involvement in a Soviet Spy ring before and during WW2
Arrested – 4 years in jail – still said he was innocent 
1948 – hearing before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)
Whittaker Chambers (Times magazine editor and former communist) said Hiss had passed him secret documents during the War...HUAC went back and forth
Hiss was convicted of perjury on two different counts and found guilty
We still don't know if he was a communist or not...

The Rosenbergs
were United States citizens convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage during a time of war, and executed. Their charges were related to the passing of information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union.  At the time of the case the evidence was circumstantial.
