2 What makes up Northern Europe?
United Kingdom Ireland Nordic countries: Denmark Finland Iceland Norway Sweden

3 Who were the early conquerers?
Ancient Britain inhabited by many groups Previous groups pushed to edges by new groups Vikings began hit and run raids around 795 Came from Nordic countries Conquered parts of Britain and France William the Conquerer of Normandy Groups like the Celts, Romans, and Germanic tribes (explain difference between Celts and Picts) Even conquered parts of North America Conquers England in 1066 (NOT THE SAME AS GREAT BRITAIN), began to rule and since he was French, French words made their way into English vocabulary

4 How did empires expand? By 1801, England conquers its neighbors
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Island nation means protection Great sailors and no invaders Created a worldwide empire and spread their culture No Nordic countries ever became a large power, even though they were all countries by 1600.

5 What is the economy like?
Rely on manufacturing as well as traditional activities like fishing Silicon Glen in Scotland during the 1990s Every country but Norway has joined the European Union (EU) SG: lots of computer technology companies set up here but eventually moved in the early 2000s because E Europe offered cheaper costs. 6 What is their culture like?
Slowly becoming diverse Mainly Protestant with Ireland keeping Catholicism as main faith Literature: William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, William Wordsworth, Charlotte Bronte, JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling, CS Lewis, Thomas Hardy, and Oscar Wilde Just to name a few…..

7 What is life like now? Governments are responsible for well being of citizens Many programs at a HIGH tax rate Afternoon tea, smorgasbord and saunas Outdoor winter sports Horseback riding, fox hunting, rugby and cricket Swedes: smorgasbord and Finns are saunas Most winter olympic sports were created by the Norwegians (cross country skiing and ski jumping)

8 During the video: Create a T chart. One side label “positive” and on the other “negative”. While you are watching the video, write down some positive and negative outcomes of the Industrial Revolution.
