4 1. General Aspects Caldas: Potential
Caldas is strategically located in the Andean region, between the roadways of the west and the Magdalena River, in the middle of the Golden Triangle formed by Bogotá, Cali and Medellín. It offers a variety of environments and potential in agroindustry, science, and technology. Diversified Economic Base. Agriculture and cattle ranching generate 21% of the PIB of the department (state); public services 15%; social, community, and domestic services 13.3%; commerce, hotels, and restaurants 13.1%, and industry 13% (Dane, 2003). Principal crops: coffee, sugar cane, corn, and beans. Potencial in: plantains, flowers, potatoes, cold climate fruits (blackberry, lulo, tree tomato, and granadilla) and warm climate fruits (avocado and Tahiti lemon). Economic activities and social potential: Bioscience / Bioproducts / Ecoproducts / Environmental services; social capital; information technology and communications; leisure time; earth sciences; and materials (Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Agenda, 2004) Potential for ecotourism and city tourism (Manizales): environmental opportunities, hotel infrastructure, and advanced human resources. Strategic Ecosystems: Florencia and Nevados Natural National Parks (shared with Risaralda, Quindío y Tolima); the Magdalena, Cauca, La Miel, Samaná, Chinchiná, and Supía Rivers; Manso River Reserve; San Diego lagoon and La Cristalina forests.
