Urbanisation is the movement of people to settle in urban areas for greater work opportunities. An example in Malta is the case of people moving to areas such as Valletta, Floriana, The Three Cities and Marsa.

Santa Venera is a Suburban area, it grew out of the demand for more housing options for workers in the urban area of Hamrun.

Birkirkara , Mosta and Hamrun. They became known as market towns because of the increase in trade happening in these towns, part of the reason for this is the good location of the town, such as the case of Mosta which lies along the route from Gozo and the North to the Urban areas near the harbour.
