A. ARTERIES Usually oxygen RICH B. VEINS Usually oxygen POOR We’ll label your diagram together highlighting some major blood vessels…

3 #5- carotid artery (to head/brain)
*also label its corresponding vein on Diagram “B” as jugular vein #6- subclavian (arms & upper body) #7- pulmonary (lungs) #1- coronary (heart muscle) #8 & #15- hepatic (liver) #10 & #17- mesenteric (intestine)

4 #11 & #18- renal (kidney) #9- dorsal aorta (heart to body) #16- inferior vena cava (back to heart) #12 & #19- iliac (lower body & legs) Hepatic portal vein: runs between liver & small intestine (not on diagram)

5 The BIG guys- ARTERIES Muscular, thick walls
Need to withstand significant pressure Branch into smaller arterioles

6 What do they do?? Main function is to carry blood AWAY from the heart
Blood is usually oxygenated or HIGH in oxygen… there’s one exception (more on that later!)

7 Where can we find them? LET’S FIND OUT 
Larger arteries are located near major organs Smaller arterioles branch into even smaller blood vessels… the CAPILLARIES …hmmm…what is so special about the capillaries LET’S FIND OUT 

8 The SMALL guys- CAPILLARIES
Smallest blood vessels (1 cell thick) We reach capillaries through this pathway: Arteries  Arterioles  Capillaries

9 What do they do?? Exchange gases & nutrients at the cellular level

10 Where do we find capillaries?
Distributed among all the body tissues Link between arteries and veins Leading AWAY from capillaries are the veins, following this pathway: Capillaries  Venules  Veins …can you guess which blood vessels we are going to look at next?

11 The FLEXIBLE guys- VEINS
Thin walled Elastic Contain VALVES Under very LOW pressure

12 What do they do?? Main function is to carry blood TOWARDS the heart
Blood is usually deoxygenated or LOW in oxygen… there’s one exception (more on that later!)

13 What is the difference b/w arteries & arterioles
Arterioles are SMALLER blood vessels branching off larger arteries. Venules branch into larger veins

14 What is the correct order?
1 Arteries 2 Arterioles 3 Capillaries 4 Venules 5 Veins

15 What is our “exception to the rule?”
PULMONARY ARTERIES carry blood that is LOW in oxygen from the heart to the lungs PULMONARY VEINS carry blood that is HIGH in oxygen from the lungs to the heart

16 What is the pulmonary circuit?
Blood vessels that take blood to and from the lungs from heart Also includes the capillaries that feed the cells of the lungs

17 What is the systemic circuit?
Vessels that circulate blood to body tissues that are NOT a part of the pulmonary tissues (pretty much everything except the lungs…) Please bring a RED & BLUE pen/pencil crayon to next class 
