Harlem After the Great Migration the African American population in many U.S. cities skyrocketed. Maybe none more so than New York City which was viewed as the unofficial capital of black America. Culture Soon a burst of African American cultural activity began occurring in Harlem. This rediscovery of African American culture was known as the Harlem Renaissance. Harlem became home to singers, painters, poets, sculptors and scholars. Harlem was alive with creativity and new thinking. 3
