FRQ PRACTICE A. Describe someone living with each of the following disorders. 1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2. Panic Disorder 3. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder B. Describe how the Learning Perspective explains each disorder. A1. Sue is living with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. She will feel tense and worried most of the time. This will negatively impact her social life. A2. Sally is living with Panic Disorder. She is not sure what triggers her panic attacks or when they will happen. When panic attacks do occur, Sally will experience chest pains, shortness of breath, and possibly feel like her throat is closing.

There is a link between conditioned fear and generalized anxiety. People with panic disorder associate anxiety with certain cues. Someone with OCD negatively reinforces compulsions because performing them lessens anxiety.

One social-cognitive reason is ruminating on negative thoughts.

As people experience anxiety symptoms, they can use relaxation techniques to lessen the anxiety. 2. OCD can be treated with a Token Economy. Each time a compulsion is not used, the person can receive a token that can later be used for a reward.

The person can work on changing the negative thoughts that cause their depressed behaviors, and then change the unhelpful behaviors that keep them depressed.

Someone with low self-esteem could be helped from psychodynamic therapy, by looking for common, recurring themes in current and past relationships that cause the person to have a low self-esteem.

A couple who is having marriage problems can be helped from using the client-centered therapy technique of active listening. They restate what the other person is saying and really listen to how their spouse is feeling. The therapist is there to help clarify, as needed.
