Grouping Symbols

2. Simplify by Removing Grouping Symbols
Many expressions use grouping symbols such as parentheses, bracket, and braces.
3x + 5[2 – 7(y + 2)]
The innermost parentheses are always removed first.

Simplify. 3x + 5[2 – 7(y + 2)] 3x + 5[2 – 7(y + 2)] = 3x + 5[2 – 7y – 14] = 3x + 5[– 7y – 12] = 3x – 35y – 60
