1 PIC NEEDED

2 Jan 1 / Act D 61 Mixing Hot and Cool Water LEARNING TARGET: I will investigate what happens to thermal energy between water samples of different volumes and temperatures. CH Q What happens to the energy when hot and cool water are mixed? VOCAB: next slide

3 Review: conduction – Insulation – Heat – Temperature -
transfer of heat through touching prevents movement of thermal energy process of transferring thermal energy measure of particle movement

4 PROCEDURE AND DATA MATERIALS: PROCEDURE: Read on pg. D and summarize DATA: WS Mixing Water Data

5 SUGGESTED RESULTS

6 Do your results support the Law of Conservation of Energy? Explain.
POST DISCUSSION Do your results support the Law of Conservation of Energy? Explain. Do your results support the idea that thermal energy is transferred from hot to cold and not the other way around? Explain. YES. However a little energy was lost to environment, no new thermal energy appeared. YES. If there's more hot water there is more energy. Equal amounts ended up ½ way.

7 3. In this experiment, how does the process of heating compare to how energy moves in a home?
Styrofoam cup like walls/insulation. Surface (where a lot of heat lost to environment) is like windows/leaks.

8 ANALYSIS - Discuss and answer Q 2-4 & 6 on pg.D 49 ANS CH Q What happens to the energy when hot and cool water are mixed? A: thermal energy moves from HOT TO COLD HOMEWORK Catch up on Journals – Complete Analysis Q’s
