2. Mythology Zeus held a banquet for the marriage of Peleus and Thetis
Eris was not invited
Eris was the Goddess of Strife and Discord
Zeus thought if she went to the party that she would make everyone upset
Eris being upset that she was not invited brought with her the Golden Apple of Discord

3. The Apple Of Discord
The golden apple was from the gardens of the Hesperides
In later tellings of the myth the apple was inscribed with ΚΑΛΛΙΣΤΗΙ or “For the Fairest”

4. What Happened? Eris threw the apple to the Gods
Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena all claimed it, but asked Zeus to name one of them the most beautiful
Zeus, not wanting to choose a side, gave the task to Paris (a Prince of Troy)
The three Goddesses met Paris on Mount Ida so that he could decide who was the fairest

5. What Happened?
While Paris was judging, the goddesses tried to bribe him
Athena offered him skill and power in times of war
Hera offered to make him King of Europe and Asia
Aphrodite offered him Helen of Sparta
Paris chooses Aphrodite as the winner and received his prize
This choice is the mythological basis of what started the Trojan War

6. Today’s Usage An “Apple of Discord” is the centerpoint of an argument
It is also a smaller issue that could become a bigger dispute
Also in Barcelona there is a place named “La manzana de la discordia”
It is named this way because “manzana” means both apple and city-block in spanish
Also because that block contains four different interpretations of Modernisme architecture

7. A good modern day example of an “Apple of Discord” would be who should have won the Super Bowl.
The New England Patriots? Or the Los Angeles Rams?
This event causes people to disagree, and it causes a lot of trouble. Just like the apple did.
