1 EPA Worker Protection Training
Compliance with the Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Final rules became effective January 1, 2018

2 Who needs this class? Anyone employee who may work in areas where pesticides have been applied in the production of agricultural plants. Anyone who has a valid MDARD Certified Pesticide Applicators License does not need to take this class. Landscaping pesticide application is not covered by WPS training BULLET 2: MDARD Certificate holders can their certificate to Alternatively, they can also to this themselves: a) login to the training system, b) click this course name, c) click Equivalents tab at bottom of page, d) launch the info page, e) when the upload button appears use it to upload a pdf of your course.

3 Overview This class is only to be presented by a certified applicator who has a valid MDARD applicator license and has read and filled out the instructor form which is on the MSU EHS webpage. This class covers the general information required by WPS. You must receive site-specific training at each facility. BULLET 1: seems irrelevant to the audience. Why do trainees need to know this? BULLET 2 & 3: Combine them as same point.

4 Respiratory Protection and Injury/Exposure
When the pesticide label indicates a respirator is required: Medical clearance must be obtained from the University Physician and maintained as current The form is available at

A fit test and training must completed annually Contact Lillian Brezzell at or as soon as you receive your reminder If there is any injury or exposure, it must be reported immediately Injury report forms are available from the HR workers’ compensation office

6 Carbamates and Organophosphates
Anyone who mixes, sprays or has significant exposure to carbamates or organophosphates will need to be medically monitored. Information on the medical monitoring can be found at: This page also includes a list of carbamates and organophosphates that are registered for use in Michigan.

8 Lone Workers PREPARE UPON RETURN:
Know where on the property you are going and what your task will be. Take along a basic first aid kit and know how to use it. Take a well-charged cell phone. Check in before heading out to the field. Make sure others know where you will be and when you will return. If you will be out for a long time, arrange to check in that you are okay. UPON RETURN: Check in when finished and you are back at base farm. Will ESL workers know the term “check in?” If not, repeat using “contact site staff” or “talk to/tell site staff.”

9 Following This Event: Your completion will be recorded in Ability system ( within 1 week by your trainer. This classroom training is required annually. Make sure you have the WPS track on your account by logging into Ability. If the Worker Protection Standard (WPS) track is not listed with the course and site options, then use + icon. This will ensure you get a reminder on time to schedule next year’s training. Schedule immediately to avoid losing access to all sites. Site-Specific training – only required once for any location. Also good to mention that if they need respirator training, that track should also be added.

10 Site-Specific Training
You must receive site-specific training from qualified trainer before entering a treated area: Contact the Farm reception staff or manager Location of the Central Notification Area Learn the items on the Central Notification Area Decontamination station location(s) and materials available there Policies and procedures to request entry to a treated area after normal operation hours The Farm Manager will record your training
