Timeline Battle of the Marne Sept 1914 Turning point as neither side could make progress due to new technology and started digging trenches Battle of Verdun February 1916 Germans attacked F in Verdun area with aim to ‘bleed France white’. Plan almost worked. July-Nov The Battle of the Somme To relieve pressure on F at Verdun, Haig launched controversial offensive. Huge casualties on first day 56,000. July 1917 Passchendaele After a promising start, British failed to capitalise due to poor weather conditions. Battle of Jutland 1916 Main battle on open seas. Both sides claimed victory.
