How Jesus Handled Shame
2
❐ Growing up in a poor family.
Luke 2: When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
3
John 6:42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
4
❐ Working in a lower-class job.
Mark 6:3 “Isn’t this the carpenter?” And they took offense at him. Matthew 13:55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?”
5
❐ Rumors about his birth.
Matthew 1:19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. John 8:41 “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.” ❐ Rumors about his birth.
6
❐ Being raised in a despised city.
John 1:46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
7
❐ Being rejected by his own hometown and his own people.
Matthew 13: “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” John 1:11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. ❐ Being rejected by his own hometown and his own people.
8
❐ The tragedy surrounding his birth.
Matthew 2:16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
9
❐ His ethnic heritage. Luke 2:1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
10
❐ Being misunderstood by his own family.
Mark 3:21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” Mark 3:32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” John 7:5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
11
❐ His ordinary physical appearance.
Isaiah 53:2 He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
12
Luke 23: The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” ❐ His shameful death.
