1 The fuel gauge in Paula’s car says that it has 15 miles to go until the car runs out of gas. There is a gas station 5 miles ahead. Unfortunately, when she gets there, the station has closed permanently. Will Paula be able to make the next gas station that is 11 miles in the opposite direction? Draw the situation on a horizontal number line. Then explain your reasoning.

2 Before his dive, a scuba diver’s oxygen tank reads, “24 minutes until empty.” If it takes the diver 1 minute to descend 50 feet and 2 minutes to ascend 50 feet, what is the maximum depth the diver can dive and still make it back to the surface before running out of oxygen? Draw a vertical number line to help explain your reasoning.
