11 References Why? Only information that has been used in the text is cited Harvard and Vancouver styles References are an important part of any research paper (whether it be a seminar or project protocol). A reference allows the reader to identify the source of your information - whether it be direct quotations, factors and/or figures. There are numerous standards of referencing and each journal tends to have their own technique. The difference between a list of references and a bibliography should be mentioned. In a bibliography, all the sources are cited whereas in a reference list ONLY the information that has been used (and appears) in the text is cited. For our purposes, we will be looking at both the Harvard and Vancouver styles of referencing. Preference: Harvard Faculty of Health Sciences: Vancouver Whichever system is used, it must be stressed that you have to remain consist throughout. Harvard and Vancouver styles may vary between University's. Therefore, you should check with your advisor on the exact details of either method. I have provided some hand outs for you. It

12 Harvard style In text: authors name and date of publication (Steyn et al., 2005). Reference list: alphabetical by author There are numerous variations on the Harvard style. You should check with your advisor regarding the University's standards.

13 Vancouver style Uses a number series to indicate references 1, 2
References: appear in the order that they were used in the text Style: numbers may be upper or lower case These are the basic styles: Important to consult the instructions for authors before submitting an article to a journal.
