1 The formation of a new species
Speciation

2 What is a species? A species is a group of organisms that
Can interbreed Produce fertile offspring Mate in nature

3 What do you get when you breed a donkey and a horse?
A MULE!!! Does the mule fit the definition of a species?

4 Why does a MULE NOT fit the definition of a species??
Can interbreed X Produce fertile offspring Do so in nature

5 What do get when you breed a tiger and a lion?
A LIGER!!! Does the liger fit the definition of a species?

6 Why does a LIGER NOT fit the definition of a species??
Can interbreed X Produce fertile offspring X Do so in nature

7 Speciation is the evolution of a new species.

8 Speciation occurs when
Formerly interbreeding organisms are prevented from mating and producing fertile offspring. This is called reproductive isolation.

9 What does isolated mean
What does isolated mean? Can you think of any ways that a species might become isolated? timing/habitat

10 Speciation can occur slowly or quickly.

11 Can we see slow change in the fossil record?
Can you see the small changes to the Diatom over millions of years?

12 How does the fossil record support rapid change?

13 Which is which?? Quick vs Slow?

14 Species will diversify when introduced to a new environment
Evolution leads to the wide diversity of life seen in an evolutionary chart

15 How is speciation shown on an evolutionary chart?
Is there a point on the chart where we can see speciation occur?
