1 Bullying beyond school

2 “Bullying” A word that is applied to children and to school situations…..but has now escaped into the community of work. People talk about ‘workplace bullying’. Is this justified? Do adults bully each other? Is this the same as children bullying each other?

3 Harassment Harassment in general terms is unwanted conduct affecting the dignity of men and women in the workplace. It may be related to age, sex, race, disability, religion, sexual orientation, nationality or any personal characteristic of the individual, and may be persistent or an isolated incident. The key is that the actions or comments are viewed as demeaning and unacceptable to the recipient.

4 Bullying Bullying may be characterised as offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour, an abuse or misuse of power through means intended to undermine, humiliate, denigrate or injure the recipient.

5 Examples Can you think of examples of the following, either happening at school or in the workplace? Is there any difference between being at school and being at work? Where are you better protected?

6 Example 1 spreading malicious rumours, or insulting someone by word or behaviour (particularly on the grounds of age, race, sex, disability, sexual orientation and religion or belief)

7 Example 2 ridiculing or demeaning someone – picking on them or setting them up to fail

8 Example 3 deliberately undermining a competent worker by overloading and constant criticism

10 Work load management Who is more protected against work overload, students at school or workers in the workplace? How can you protect yourself against bullying and harassment if you have a part time job?
