4. Aeneas Troianus arma cepit et cum multis viris oppidum defendere maturavit The Trojan Aeneas seized his weapons and hurried to defend his town with many men.

5. Sed Venus dea, mater Aeneae, eum in mediō oppidō invenit et verba fecit: But the goddess Venus, the mother of Aeneas, found him in the middle of the town and she said:

6. “Audi sententiam meam. Tene memoriā 1 3 2 1 4 familiam tuam

“Novam patriam invenies. Cede fortunae. Dei Troianos poenā durā afficient.” “You will find a new country. Give in to fortune. The gods will afflict/affect the Trojans with a hard punishment.”

Aeneas consilium non grate audivit, sed officium fecit. 7 Aeneas did not listen to the advice/counsel gratefully/pleasingly, but he did his duty.

10. Viros reduxit et amicos convocavit
Viros reduxit et amicos convocavit. Amici convenerunt et excedere paraverunt He led his men and he called his friends. His friends came and prepared to leave.

11. Tum Aeneas ex oppidō patrem portavit et filium
parvum duxit. 8
Then Aeneas carried his father out of the city and led his small son.

12. Cum multis servis et sociis fugit
Cum multis servis et sociis fugit. Singuli in locum commodum convenerunt et ibi castra posuerunt. 8 He ran with many servants and allies/comrades. One by one they came to a convenient place, and there they camped.

13. Materiam ex silvā portaverunt et naves 2 3 4 1 5 7 paraverunt
Materiam ex silvā portaverunt et naves paraverunt. 6 They carried timber out of the forest and they prepared (built) ships.

14. Tum naves in aquam traxerunt et undis
mandaverunt et migraverunt.
Then they dragged the ships into the water and they entrusted them to the waves, and they
left.

15. Ad multas insulas et terras novas venerunt sed patriam novam non invenerunt They came to many islands and new lands, but they did not find a new country.

16. Vitam duram egerunt. Ira Iunonis, reginae
deorum, hoc effecit.
They lived a harsh life. The anger of Juno, the queen of the gods, brought this about.

17. In insulā Cretā castra posuerunt
In insulā Cretā castra posuerunt. Tum in mediō somnō Aeneas Penates vidit et sententiam audivit: 9 On the island of Crete, they camped. Then in the middle of sleep, Aeneas saw the Penates (ancestral gods) and he heard their advice:

18. “Creta patria vestra non erit. Excedite, Troiani
“Creta patria vestra non erit. Excedite, Troiani “Crete will not be your country. Leave, Trojans.

19. “Locus est quem Graeci Hesperiam, alii Italiam 2 1 3 4 6 7 8 vocant
“Locus est quem Graeci Hesperiam, alii Italiam vocant. Ibi terminum curarum perpetuarum invenietis. 2 “There is a place which the Greeks call Hesperia, the rest call it Italy. There you will find an end to perpetual worries/cares.

20. “Ibi in otiō et concordiā habitabitis et magnum
oppidum ponetis et munietis.”
“There you will live in peace and harmony and you will found a big city and you will fortify it.”

21. Ita Troiani consilium novum ceperunt
Ita Troiani consilium novum ceperunt. Castra moverunt et ad Italiam navigaverunt And so the Trojans came up with a new idea/plan. They moved their camp and sailed to Italy.
