4 Dividing by 1 and 0 Division Problems Involving 1 and 0 Example:
Any nonzero number divided by itself is 1. Any nonzero number divided by 1 remains unchanged. Zero may be divided by any nonzero number; the result is always zero. Zero can never be the divisor in a division problem. Example: ÷ 8 = 1 ÷ 249 = 0 ÷ 1 = 15 ÷ 0 cannot be done

5 Dividing by a Single-Digit Number
Example: Divide 128 ÷ 5. 2 5 R3 How many times can 5 be divided into 28? How many times can 5 be divided into 12? 5 128 10 5  2 = 10 2 12 – 10 = 2 8 Bring down the 8. 25 5  5 = 25 3 28 – 25 = 3 The answer is 25 with a remainder of 3 or 25 R 3.

6 Dividing by a Several-Digit Number
Example: Divide 1452 ÷ 30. 4 8 R12 How many times can 30 be divided into 145? How many times can 30 be divided into 252? 30 is too large to divide into 14. 30 1452 120 30  4 = 120 25 145 – 120 = 25 2 Bring down the 2. 240 30  8 = 240 12 252 – 240 = 12 The answer is 48 R 12.
