Quebec Act was Passed
Changed the Territories and Boundaries of British North America
The Americans in the 13 Colonies were “Snubbed” by the British Government
Declared a Revolution in 1775
This takes up most of the History
Today, we will talk about everything ELSE

The British Government Controls the Entire East Side of North America
Divided up into 4 Major Colonies
Canada is called “The Province of Quebec”
America is called “The 13 Colonies”
There is also:
Nova Scotia
Newfoundland

5. 1774

6. Hudson Bay Company
A Private British Company that has dominated the Fur Trade in Canada since 1670
Largest Landowning Company in the WORLD
Owns 15% of North America
Owns “Rupert’s Land” (Western part of Canada)
Forged relationships with numerous Native American Tribe
Eventually settled the West

8. 1778
Captain James Cook travelled to the West Coast of Canada. First major explorer.
Before this was “unexplored” territory
Travelled as far west as current day “British Columbia”
As far North as the “Bering Strait”
NO Europeans living there
Only a few Native Americans
Founded Vancouver Island

14. 1783 North West Company Founded in Montreal in 1783
Competed with the Hudson Bay Company in the Fur Trade in present day Western Canada
With great wealth (money/power) at stake, tension increased between companies
Several minor armed skirmishes (battles) broke out between companies

16. 1785
City of “Saint John” New Brunswick was incorporated into Quebec (Canada)
“Fredericton”, New Brunswick opened the University: The Provincial Academy of Arts and Sciences
One of the oldest Universities in the country
Eventually The University of New Brunswick

17. 1789 Alexander Mackenzie Working for the North West Company
Second major explorer to travel to Western Canada
Travelled to Beaufort Sea in 1793
Mackenzie River named after him

20. Constitutional Act 1791 Numerous people were living in Quebec (Canada)
After the American Revolution, thousands of British citizens entered Quebec
French and English backgrounds
French: Spoke French, were Catholic
English: Spoke English, were Protestant
Both groups wanted fair representation, and to maintain their cultures/ traditions

21. Constitutional Act 1791 In order to accommodate BOTH groups
British government splits Quebec (Canada) into 2 parts
Lower Canada: for the French citizens
Kept French laws and traditions
Upper Canada: for the British citizens
Kept British laws and traditions
Each controlled by their own Governor

Why were they called this?

26. 1792 George Vancouver Third major explorer to the West Coast
Began Mapping the West Coast (Pacific Coast)
City of Vancouver named after him!

29. Last but not Least!

30. 1796 York (Present day Toronto) Becomes capital city of Upper Canada
And still is to this day!
But there is no Upper Canada anymore…
So what does this mean?...
