1 Solving literal equations
Lesson 29 Solving literal equations

2 A literal equation is an equation with more than one variable.
Use inverse operations to solve for a specific variable. The solution will be in terms of the other variables.

3 Solving for a variable Solve for y: 2x+3y =10 Subtract 2x -2x -2x
Div by y = -2x + 10

4 Solving for variables on both sides
Solve for p: 4p + 2a -5 = 6a + p Eliminate p p p from one side 3p + 2a -5 = 6a Subtr 2a a a 3p = 4a Add 3p = 4a + 5 Div by p = 4a + 5

5 solve Solve for r: 3r + 2s -7 = -4s + 4r -8

6 Solving a formula for a variable
C = 5/9 ( F-32) solve for F Mult by 9/ C = 5/9(F-32) 9/5 C = F-32 Add /5 C +32 = F
